Tips On Leather Care

When you buy your new leather jacket you can't imagine ever needing to clean a spilled drink off of it, or get out an ink stain!  But if the impossible should happen, here are a few tips on what to do, what not to do, and how to care for your new motorcycle or leather jacket.

Some TLC is Needed  Leather is a natural product that needs periodic conditioning to protect it from drying out.  Be sure to purchase a leather conditioner that is specifically designed for the type of leather your jacket is made from.  As you wear your leather jacket it will become softer, and it's appearance will change as the leather ages.  This only adds to the beauty of your jacket.

Routine Care   Don't wait till your new leather jacket is full of dirt and grime before deciding to do something about it.  Once dirt becomes readily visible, the stains may get set in and may not be easily removed.  Cleaning leather is simple.  Use a mild detergent on a soft cloth to remove topical dirt.  Just be sure not to make the leather too wet.  There is no need to rinse after washing.  We also recommend that you purchase a combination leather cleaner/conditioner to help return moisture to the leather that is lost in the washing.

Spills  The first thing not to do is panic!  Simply blot up the liquid with a soft cloth or sponge.  Do not rub!  If there is a spot that needs something extra done to it, use a damp cloth or sponge soaked in lukewarm water and a mild detergent.  Wait until the jacket is completely dry before wearing it again.

Ink Stains   There's nothing more scary than seeing an ink stain on your new leather coat or jacket.  But again, don't panic!  Just dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol (hairspray will do in a pinch.  Just be sure to spray it on the cotton swab and not directly on the coat!) and rub it over the ink stain.  Dry it with a blow dryer.  If the stain is still there after drying, you may want to use an acetone-free nail polish remover.  Just rub a small amount of the remover over the stain with a soft cloth.  The stain should disappear almost instantly.  Once the ink stain is gone, be sure to remove any traces of rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover with a soft cloth and mild detergent.

Some No-No's   Never use harsh products like cleaning solvents, stain removers, shoe polish, saddle soap, turpentine, furniture polish, varnish remover, abrasive cleaners or any other kind of chemical solution on your leather jacket!

Using these tips will help keep your motorcycle jacket, leather coat, leather jacket or leather handbag looking better than the day you bought it!
